Sourav began well in his captaincy career leading India to a win against South Africa and also to the finals of the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy. He scored two centuries in that tournament but unfortunately lost to New Zealand in the finals.

In the 2001 Australia tour of India came one of Ganguly’s greatest achievements as a captain. Australia at that time was invincible having won 16 consecutive test matches and has already won the first test match of the series. Both relatively new to the pressure of international cricket but under the guidance of Ganguly took it upon themselves to earn the victory. And who can forget the sight of bare-chested Ganguly waving his shirt on the balcony of Lord’s after Zaheer Khan nudged the ball down to fine leg for the final runs.

It is a sight forever etched in the memory of Indian cricket fans. When asked about his reason for the act Ganguly simply replied by saying it was a response to Flintoff’s act back in India of parading around with his shirt.
