Sourav Ganguly Biography
sportswallah

Ganguly’s playing style is one of a kind and is heavily reliant on the offside which has been lauded by many cricketers like Rahul Dravid who called Ganguly as the god of offside.

Ganguly grew up watching videos of David Gower and was very impressed by him. The classic Ganguly cover drive is a sight for sore eyes- the slow backlift of the bat, the little shuffle across the middle and off stump and the transfer of the weight right on top of the ball to send the ball scurrying across to the boundary.

“The captain has a big role. It is important to keep the boys’ confidence high and to keep one’s faith in them. I try to give my support to the youngsters because nobody comes in as a world beater. Okay, some rare cricketers score a century on debut, but that doesn’t mean the rest are not good enough. We have to give them more opportunities, which was not there when I started out. Captaincy these days is more off the field than on the field

On the offside Ganguly was equally balanced on the front and back foot- his square drives- and back foot- punched through the vacant square and extra cover region were impossible to stop.

Ganguly is well known to have an impeccable understanding of the flight of the ball which enables him to make quick decisions on whether to advance or play the delivery within the crease. This particular quality made him unstoppable against spinners especially left armers.

Sourav Ganguly Biography

However, Ganguly too had his fair share of difficulties in playing the short-pitched deliveries- something which was exploited heavily by the Australians and South Africans.

He used to get out quite often when peppered around the rib cage and wasn’t good at playing the hook or pull shot either. However later in his career, he did incorporate these features to his game up to a large extent.

Another feature that was prominent in Ganguly’s play was his failure to take quick singles- many an occasion it happened that Ganguly failed to take a single to release pressure or a teammate was run out instead! However fitness was a priority for Ganguly- he was the first captain to realize that an International coach was required to take the Indian National Cricket Team to the next level.

John Wright and Ganguly had a partnership that revolutionized Indian cricket for the long run  – Wright with his fitness regime and Ganguly with his aggressive form of cricket enabled India to expand its horizon.

Sourav Ganguly captaincy:

Sourav Ganguly Biography
espncricinfo

Sourav Ganguly Biography covers his captaincy heroics which he has done for the Mean In blue for more than a decade and builds the new bright charismatic Indian team.

The 2000 match-fixing scandal was a dark phase in international cricket with certain Indian players and especially the captain being involved too. Sachin Tendulkar stepped down from captaincy and as Ganguly was the vice-captain at that point of time- he ascended to captaincy. Who knew at that moment what a gift Indian cricket had received.

“People will support you, people will criticize you. When you cross that rope everything is about you.”

Sourav Ganguly addressing the media after being named the captain of the Indian National Team.

Sourav began well in his captaincy career leading India to a win against South Africa and also to the finals of the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy. He scored two centuries in that tournament but unfortunately lost to New Zealand in the finals.

In the 2001 Australia tour of India came one of Ganguly’s greatest achievements as a captain. Australia at that time was invincible having won 16 consecutive test matches and has already won the first test match of the series. The second test was at the Mecca of Indian cricket- the Eden Gardens in Ganguly’s home town.

But yes, it’s a different phase. The responsibility is less because as a captain you have to do many other things. But it is the same for all other captains.

Having conceded a lead of 274 in the first innings India looked set to lose the match and the series. But in a dramatic turn of events, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid batter the entire fourth day scoring 281 and 180 respectively to set Australia a target of  384 on a tired down day 5 pitch.

Harbhajan Singh set a spiraling trap of spin bowling around the Australian batting to lead India to a historic win bad Australia became only the third side to lose a test match after enforcing a follow on.

The 2002 NatWest series was a turning point in the career of many Indian cricketers and it would not be wrong to say it was a huge moment for Ganguly as well. The Test series ended in a 1-1 draw but the triangular ODI series brought success for India and for Ganguly as captain. India was set a massive 326 as a target for the final.

You are anxious before every game because you had to win it. If you didn’t you went down the ladder. I felt proud of the way we beat some teams in tough games.

Chasing, India was off to a great start courtesy Ganguly who scored 60 accompanied by Sehwag who scored 45. However, the Indian middle-order crumbled and was reduced to 146/5.

During his time at being captain, Ganguly always encouraged players to take it upon their own to win matches whether they are experienced or newcomers. And that is exactly what two youngster- Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh did in their 121 run partnership.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBDjZKngUGY

Both relatively new to the pressure of international cricket but under the guidance of Ganguly took it upon themselves to earn the victory. And who can forget the sight of bare-chested Ganguly waving his shirt on the balcony of Lord’s after Zaheer Khan nudged the ball down to fine leg for the final runs.

It is a sight forever etched in the memory of Indian cricket fans. When asked about his reason for the act Ganguly simply replied by saying it was a response to Flintoff’s act back in India of parading around with his shirt.

This was the most illustrious moment in Sourav Ganguly Biography as a captain.

“No, no I didn’t believe at all (of an Indian victory). I thought one more final was gone. And I was sitting in the corner, angry with myself and the team that we let teams to get 300 in a final, why can’t we get them out for 250 in a final and then chase it!”

Ganguly’s reply when asked about the 2002 NatWest series final.

Ganguly was also a member of the 2007 Indian World Cup team which resulted in a group exit for the men in blue. However, it was a year that yielded an enormous amount of success personally for Ganguly. He was prolific in Test matches as well as performing well in ODI matches.

“[We] were able to change the face of Indian cricket. That’s what I’m proud of because I think we made a huge difference.
