Who is Jason Roy?


Jason Jonathan Roy (born 21 July 1990) is an English cricketer who has previously represented England in One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket. 

He plays for Surrey in domestic cricket and has played in several Twenty20 tournaments, notably for Gujarat Lions, Delhi Daredevils Paarl Royals (SA 20), and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.

Roy came to England as a kid after being born in South Africa. He made his T20I debut in 2014, ODI debut in 2015, and Test debut in 2019. He was a member of England’s World Cup-winning squad in 2019.

Roy bats first as a right-handed hitter. He owns the England record for highest ODI score (180 against Australia during England’s 2018 tour) and the England record for best ODI partnership (256* against Sri Lanka during their 2016 tour of England). 

He was the first hitter in T20I history to be ejected for blocking the pitch.

He migrated to England with his family from South Africa when he was 10 years old and attended The Hawthorns School for a few years before transferring to Whitgift School. 

He played alongside future Surrey teammate and England test opener Rory Burns, who is the same age as him, at Whitgift School. 

He also played for the Surrey club Reigate Priory Cricket Club. He represented Surrey in age groups ranging from Under-11 through Under-19 and Academy. 

He played in the Surrey Under-19 trip to South Africa in 2007, when he top-scored for Surrey with a 51-run innings against Western Province Under-19s.

He was a part of the Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy’s 2008 intake of players, and on 15 June 2007, he made a vital contribution in his one-day debut for the Surrey second team, scoring 48 from 33 balls in a Second XI Trophy match against Hampshire, which Surrey won by 3 runs.

Roy made no further appearances for Surrey’s second team in 2007, but was chosen to represent the South at Under-17 level at the ECB Regional Festival, which was held in Loughborough in July 2007, and in which he played in three matches against the West, Midlands, and North.
