Gowtham’s professional career began when he was selected for the under-15 Zonal Tournament in Bangalore, where he finished second in wickets. 

He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Karnataka against Bengal in November 2012, taking two wickets in the second innings.

Gowtham took two consecutive five-wicket hauls in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy season, against Delhi and Assam, to assist his team win both games. He had his career-high numbers of 7/108 in the later game.

Gowtham was purchased for 2 crores by the Mumbai Indians squad for the 2017 Indian Premier League in February 2017. On February 25, 2017, he made his List A debut for Karnataka in the 2016-17 Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Gowtham’s professional career began when he was selected for the under-15 Zonal Tournament in Bangalore, where he finished second in wickets. 

In the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy, Gowtham batted for Karnataka against Assam and achieved his first first-class century.

The Rajasthan Royals purchased Gowtham in the 2018 IPL auction in January 2018. He was picked to India B’s team for the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy in October 2018.

Gowtham scored 134 runs off 56 deliveries and claimed 8 wickets for 15 runs in a Karnataka Premier League (KPL) match for Bellary Tuskers versus Shivamogga Lions on August 23, 2019. 

The KPL matches, on the other hand, do not have full Twenty20 status. He was picked to India B’s team for the 2019-20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019.

Gowtham was picked as one of five net bowlers in India’s Test team for the series against England in January 2021. 

Gowtham was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL auction ahead of the 2021 Indian Premier League in February 2021. With a fee of INR 9.25 crores, Gowtham became the most expensive uncapped player in IPL history.
