Yuvraj Singh career started in the year of 1995, wherein he represented the state in the U-16 tournament making a debut against Jammu Kashmir. He then made his U-19 debut for Punjab in the subsequent year and scored an impressive 137* against Himachal Pradesh as well.

He broke into the Punjab Ranji trophy squad in 1997 and made his debut against the state of Orissa but unfortunately got out for a duck in the match. He returned to Domestic cricket with a bang after a string of disappointing performances and scored a mammoth 209 for the North Zone against South Zone in the Duleep Trophy,2002.

He was immediately called up for the last two ODI’S against Zimbabwe. In the 4th ODI at Hyderabad, he won the Man of the Match award for scoring 80 off 60 and also played well in the final ODI at Guwahati scoring 75 and led India to a series victory.

In a match which is considered as one of the finest in the history of Indian cricket, the visitors chased a mammoth target after England scored 325 in the first innings.

Along with former U-19 teammate, Mohammed Kaif and Singh mustered up a 121 run partnership after India was struggling in the middle overs. Yuvraj contributed 69 runs to guide India to a memorable victory.

Although 2003 marked a painful chapter for India it was rather eventful for Yuvraj. He scored his maiden ODI century against Bangladesh in Dhaka and also made his test debut against New Zealand in his home ground Mohali. He also became the second Indian to represent the Yorkshire County Cricket Club after Sachin Tendulkar.

2005 was the year Singh’s form began to flourish- the Indian Oil Cup held in Sri Lanka proved helpful to his batting strengths. Scoring 192 runs in 4 matches at an average of 48 he scored his third international ODI century against the West Indies.

But how can one wrote about the 2007 T20 World Cup and not talk about the Yuvraj’s 6 sixes in a row against. The 18th over of the Indian innings was to be bowled by English speedster Stuart Broad.

A fighter on the pitch Singh was also a fierce fight loiter off the pitch. Diagnosed with cancer in 2011, he first started showing signs when he would wake up at night and cough severely but overlooked it at that time.

He ignored it at that time in fear that it would mean to leave cricket for him and kept on playing with informing anyone. He played the entire 2011 World Cup with unbearable pain and still came out on top.

In January when proper tests were conducted the results were very difficult to believe. The results showed the growth of a tumor in his chest which was a cause for concern.

I cried like a baby. When no one could see me or hear me. Not because I feared what cancer would do, but because I didn’t want the disease. I wanted my life to be normal, which it could no longer be.

He was diagnosed with a germ cell cancer known as mediastinal seminoma which caused a tumor in between in his left lung and heart and appeared like a ball on his chest growing up to 14 centimeters.

He was treated by the same doctor who cured Lance Armstrong in the United States and was admitted in January and released in March following with which he was under rehabilitation till May.

While being admitted he used to read the autobiography of Lance Armstrong and his cancer struggle to stay inspired and never be down.

He is said to have quoted in an interview when asked about Yuvraj Singh cancer journey – “ Don’t be scared… Be positive… Please don’t think that your life is about to end… Take the right advice and act as soon as you can… If there’s an issue in your system, don’t ignore it… Look at me, I never thought I’d get the chance to again play for India, but I’ve beaten cancer…

God has given me this opportunity and my love for cricket has brought me back. I see this alone as a huge achievement… The experience has made me stronger (in the mind)… If you’re strong, then you automatically become a much more positive person. Cancer doesn’t mean that you’re going to die. “
