The 23-year-old French international and Real Madrid center back accepted that departing the Real Madrid did cross his mind when he was not on the first team, but then he got assurance from Zinedine Zidane and that persuaded him to stay.

The French superstar accepted that once he thought that his future did not lie at the Real Madrid when he was on the periphery.

Though the Manchester United was there to hijack him and he struggled under the Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti and also struggled initially at the first of Zidane.

The French coach avouched that he had a talk with the Real Madrid supremo before the summer regarding the future.

He said: “I wondered if the club was in tune with my aim, which was to play,”

“I needed to know what I had to do to get playing time. Zidane told me things clearly, notably that I was important to him. We left on good terms.

“The president and the coach told me they were going in my direction. I put my head on the handlebars and I worked before and during pre-season.

“I don’t forget that Real Madrid is a big thing. And I don’t forget that I’m only 23, even though I’m finishing my sixth season here.”

Under the French coach Varane got a first team football regularly but in the month of February he picked up an injury and accepts that he has no plan of leaving the Madrid side.

He added: “I’m very well in Madrid,”

 “All the lights are green. I’m focused on the exciting spring that awaits us.

“It would be wonderful to spend my whole career at Madrid. But my early days taught me to enjoy every moment because everything can change very quickly – I saw that with Euro 2016.”
