And the Italy international Marco Verratti, who is currenlt playing for the France giant Paris Saint-Germain since 2012 has recently admitted that the Spanish giant FC Barcelona players thought their hopes of qualifying had gone when PSG forward Edinson Cavani scored an away goal during Wednesday's Champions League comeback of FC Barcelona.
Leading 4-0 prior to Wednesday's return leg in the last 16, PSG suffered a humiliating defeat as they were eliminated 6-5 on aggregate following a 6-1 loss at Barcelona.
Luis Enrique’s boy’s ambitions of pulling off the remarkable feat of overturning their 4-0 first-leg deficit were on track when they led by three goals at the Camp Nou.
But Cavani's 62nd-minute goal left Barcelona needing three goals to overhaul the French champions.
And somehow FC Barcelona did just that as Luis Enrique’s side scored three unanswered goals from the 88th minute to Sergi Roberto netting the 95th-minute winner.
And the PSG playmaker Verratti told media even Barca had not believed they could do it, as speaking to the media after the game, the 24-year-old said, “Barca deserve to qualify,"
"It was difficult to play, to make passes. They pressed too much in the first half. In the second half, we managed to play better. But we conceded the third goal and we understood that we had to play. We couldn't wait for it to finish like that.”
“We're going to have difficult moments. There will be others. We have to find the strength to pick ourselves up. We have to be men. We're all sad. We lost 6-1 — it wasn't the referee's fault. We're the first ones responsible for this."
"After Edi's goal, we were calmer. I spoke to the Barca players — they told me it was over. I don't find any explanation for conceding three goals in five minutes. That's football. It's a match I'll never forget. I hope it'll serve as a lesson for everyone." He added.
