The Spain international and former Atletico Madrid’s star Diego Costa was a major injury doubt heading into the clash with rivals Real Madrid after tearing his hamstring.
But he was named in the starting XI after returning to training and he played for just nine minutes at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon and was replaced by Adrian Lopez, where Real Madrid went on to win 4-1 after extra-time.
On that Diego Simeone has recently revealed that he has no regrets about risking Diego Costa for the 2014 Champions League final and insists he would make the same decision if the game was replayed due to the striker's influence on the team, because Costa was as important to Atletico Madrid as Lionel Messi is to Barcelona.
As in a recent interview with AS, the 46-year-old Diego Simeon said, "If I had it all over again, he'd play the final from the start again. How could our best player not play?”
"He wasn't injured! Did you see the 100m sprints he was doing out on the pitch?"
"I said: 'If this lad can give me 45 minutes in the Champions League final…' It's Diego Costa!"
"It's like Messi being at 50 per cent and not playing for Barca in the Champions League final. For us, Diego Costa was our Messi."
