World Cup 2018 Team of the Tournament

Defenders

Raphael Varane (France)

The centre-back from France was predicted to be of a top-quality defender when he was purchased by Real Madrid in 2011, and he lived up to the prediction.

He was a rock at the back for Les Blues and played a crucial part in the final win against Croatia. But his best performance came against Uruguay in the quarter-finals where he even scored a crucial goal.

Domagoj Vida (Croatia)

Vida’s best moment came in the quarter-finals against Russia when he scored an extra-time goal, but the opponents soon equalised and took the game to the shoot-out where Croatia emerged winners eventually.

He played a vital role against Argentina in the group game, provided an assist in the final and was always present at the back and helped Croatia to create history on the world stage.

Diego Godin (Uruguay)

Godin used all his experiences to guide Uruguay to the 2018 World Cup quarter-finals but could not progress further sadly.

He would still be ruing over the close range miss against France in the quarter-final game, but that would never overshadow his performances in the tournament.
