Indian veteran cricketer MS Dhoni’s 2018 year was a disastrous one. Besides that there was the meteoric rise of Rishabh Pant and stunning form of Dinesh Karthik. All these added to the speculations of Dhoni’s retirement.

But with the start of new year, came a newly emerged Dhoni. His recent form has made him India’s crisis man in ODIs. He shut his critics with impressive performances in Australia and New Zealand.

Against the Aussies, Dhoni was more lethal. He scored back-to-back three fifties in three-match ODI series. As a result he helped his team win the first-ever bilateral ODI series on Australian soil.

Dhoni amassed 193 runs and became the series’ top run-getter. As a result he bagged the Man of the Series trophy. In New Zealand too, Dhoni played some beautiful knocks which showed he is in great touch.

Seeing his great form, former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara praised Dhoni. He said that the wicketkeeper-batsman has secured his place in World Cup squad despite the stiff competition from Pant and Karthik. In an interview with India Today, Sangakkara said:

Rishabh Pant has been an outstanding discovery for India. So competition for places whether you are young or old actually drives you to do better. It just depends on how you take it. Whether you look at it as an opportunity or a threat.

Sanga also added, “I think MS is quite secure about who he is and how he has gone about it and I think he understands people very well. So he will understand how to navigate those issues not just about selection but also personalities in the dressing room.”

Experience matters a lot

Sangakkara also said that Dhoni’s massive experience will be invaluable to the Men in Blue. He feels that Indian skipper Kohli will be happy to have Dhoni and will benefit a lot from the veteran in tough situations.

“When it comes to a World Cup, experience counts a lot. Not just experience but that is close to its best. I think MS Dhoni will definitely find a place in that World Cup 15 for India,” he said.

“Also I think with his experience, Virat will want to have a very cool head on the field, if push comes to shove when they are in a tight situation in a World Cup,” he added.
