Dinesh Chandimal Charged With Ball-Tampering Incident

The ball-tampering incident has once again hit the cricketing world, this time in a Test match between Sri Lanka and West Indies on Saturday in St. Lucia.

Cricket news: The entire Sri Lankan team refused to take the field following the incident

The umpires who were conducting the match suspected that the Sri Lankan captain Dinesh Chandimal has changed the condition of the ball and hence the umpires decided to change the ball.

This decision of the umpires did not go down well with the Sri Lankan team and hence they refused to take the field after the allegations were made against them, which delayed the start of Day 3’s play.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to charge the Sri Lankan captain Chandimal for breaching the Level 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The play resumed on Day 3 after match referee Javagal Srinath spoke with the entire Sri Lankan team and persuaded them to take the field as play began two hours later from the stipulated time.

On-field umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould confirmed that the conditions of the ball was changed and hence West Indies were awarded a penalty of five extra runs.

Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal has breached Article 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to changing the condition of the ball in breach of clause 41.3 of the ICC Standard Test Match, ODI and T20I Playing Conditions.

The article 2.2.9 states: Any action(s) likely to alter the condition of the ball which were not specifically permitted under clause 41.3.2 may be regarded as ‘unfair’. The following actions shall not be permitted (this list of actions is not exhaustive but included for illustrative purposes): (a) deliberately throwing the ball into the ground for the purpose of roughening it up; (b) applying any artificial substance to the ball; and applying any non-artificial substance for any purpose other than to polish the ball; (c) lifting or otherwise interfering with any of the seams of the ball; (d) scratching the surface of the ball with finger or thumb nails or any implement.

After the day’s play began, the Sri Lankan team got their thoughts together and came out of their controversy as they bundled the Windies team for 300 runs and thus restricted their lead to just 47 runs.

Lahiru Kumara was the pick of the bowlers for the Sri Lankan team. In reply the visitors began their second innings and ended the day’s play with 34 runs on board with the loss of Kusal Perrera’s wicket.
