The statue of the Argentina’s all time top scorer Lionel Messi, who has already scored more than 500 career goals was unveiled in June shortly after Argentina lost the 2016 final of the Copa America Centenario to Chile on penalties, a defeat that made the five times ballon d’Or Lionel Messi to say he was quitting the national team.
But, the statue on the Paseo de la Gloria walkway overlooking the River Plate was severed at the waist leaving only the lower body and a ball and is now in need of urgent repair after the head, arms and torso were removed.
Most importantly police have not made any announcement about the perpetrators yet and according to the Buenos Aires municipal government the Bronze statue, which was erected last summer after the 29-year-old Messi announced his decision to retire from the national side was the victim of an act of vandalism.
As the city's culture secretariat said,
"It was the victim of an act of vandalism,"
"The city government is already working on repairs."
