Tabraiz Shamsi’s Wicket Celebration Gets Banned

South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi definitely knows a thing or two when it comes to celebrating a wicket. The star from the Proteas squad often makes it to the headlines more for his celebrations than his performances.

He performed the bus-driver celebration in the Indian Premier League after dismissing David Warner. His other celebrations include pulling on a mask, the Mortal Kombat and shoe-telephone celebration.

The left-arm spinner did all these in the Caribbean Premier League. Shamsi never fails to surprise his fans with his quirky moves after taking a wicket.

However the International Cricket Council (ICC) have now banned one of the celebrations from his colourful repertoire. He will no longer pull on the mask after taking a wicket.

Shamsi had introduced this celebration during this year’s CPL, where he played for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. After dismissing Shai Hope of Barbados Tridents, Shamsi pulled out a scarf from under his neck. He then covered his face with it and then wheeled away.

The 28-year-old tweaker has been performing the celebration in the Mzansi Super League, where he plays for Paarl Rocks. But now because of the ban he has to stop doing so.

The ban has left Shamsi disappointed

When Shamsi got the news of the ban, it did not go down well with him. He clarified that he has no intentions of disrespecting a batsman with the celebration.

Shamsi was quoted clarifying the matter on Netwerk24:

There is so much pressure on you as a bowler in a game. I’m having fun with my celebrations and it is definitely not because I want to be disrespectful to the batsman.

Shamsi has named the banned celebration as the Masked Magician. The naming was done probably after American magician Val Valentino.

Shamsi has so far played two Tests, 11 ODIs and 9 T20Is for his country.
