Gambhir Speculated To Be Part Of Kings XI Punjab

It is just a week ago that Gautam Gambhir announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The veteran left-handed opener started playing first-class cricket back in 1999. Since then his illustrious career has flourished over a couple of decades.

Gambhir was also part of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL). He played three seasons for his home franchise Delhi Daredevils (DD), who has recently changed their name to Delhi Capitals (DC).

After that the 37-year-old was purchased by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and was appointed the skipper. Gambhir led Kolkata to two IPL titles, before being dropped ahead of the 2018 auction. He was again purchased by Delhi franchise and was made their skipper.

Is this a new beginning for Gambhir?

However this time around, Gambhir failed to flourish in his previous team. After six league games he dropped himself from captaincy as well as from the team. After resigning he didn’t feature in any of the rest of the matches.

Recently there have been some reports going around that he might now join Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). The Punjab franchise are yet to win the title and their best season was in 2014, when they reached the final. That time they lost the trophy to Gambhir-led KKR.

The assumptions are made based on the series of tweets between the Punjab franchise and Gambhir himself. He can be part of the support staff which will be headed by coach Mike Hesson.

As a result Gambhir can be part of KXIP as a mentor, batting coach or any other role. The series of tweets soon started after Gambhir announced his retirement.

Punjab wrote, “End of a chapter, a new one begins! We wish you a great future ahead, @GautamGambhir! #ThankYouGambhir for the fond memories! Image Courtesy: @IPL”
