Dhoni Plays One Hand Defence; Outsmarts Ish Sodhi

When it comes to cricket, a batsman should be technically correct to score big runs. But veteran and former Indian skipper MS Dhoni has never been a technically perfect batsman.

However he has managed to defy all odds and has scored a plethora of runs in his illustrious career. Dhoni is a smart cricketer who puts a price on his wicket. Although he is in the fag end of his career, but he still knows his capabilities.

Dhoni struggles against the spinners nowadays, but doesn’t give up easily. The same incident was visible in the 2nd T20I between New Zealand and India at the Eden Park in Auckland on Friday.

The incident happened in the 16th over of India’s innings while they were chasing. Kiwi spinner Ish Sodhi was bowling while Dhoni was batting. India were on course of a victory to level the series, while the Kiwis desperately needed a wicket.

Dhoni sensed an opportunity to go big against Sodhi and decided to come out of his crease. Seeing the batsman come out of the crease, Sodhi decided to throw the ball wide outside the off-stump.

Dhoni’s one hand defence resulted in one run

In a split second Dhoni realized that he won’t be able to reach the ball. So he concentrated on returning to his crease with his back leg. Reading the leggie’s bluff, Dhoni also tried to bring his bat back to the crease.

In the process the ball smacked the willow and went towards point. As there was no player at point region, Dhoni quickly completed a single. The shot looked even more hilarious as Dhoni’s bottom hand came off during the process.

It somewhat looked as if Dhoni had attempted a one hand defence. The fans were left in splits with the way Dhoni tried to come back into the crease to avoid a stumping dismissal.

With the improvised shot, Dhoni saved his wicket and eventually remained unbeaten till the end. He scored 20 not out from 17 balls as India chased down the target with seven balls and as many wickets to spare.
