5 Indians Who Can Be Backup Options In World Cup

Every cricketer has a dream of representing his country in the ICC Cricket World Cup. The tournament is held after every four years. As a result there is huge competition among players for those 15 World Cup spots.

On 15th April, BCCI announced the Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup. While the selection news brought good news for many, some were left heartbroken too. The squad which was announced was mostly expected, except for a few things.

Ambati Rayudu was left out of the squad and Vijay Shankar was chosen as the No. 4 batsman. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was also ignored. Pant has a long career ahead of him and will surely make the cut next time.

Although the squad looks well settled, there could be some unfortunate circumstances later. In that case some backup options need to ready to jump in when necessary. Thus a few players will be ready for such unfortunate incidents.

1. Ambati Rayudu

Rayudu seemed almost certain to be India’s No. 4 in the World Cup until the last year. He even gave up Test cricket just to solely focus on white-ball matters. Even skipper Virat Kohli had announced that Rayudu would fly to England and Wales.

However things went upside down in a matter of few months. Rayudu lost his touch this year and struggled in the tour against Australia and New Zealand. To add to his woes, he isn’t going through a good time in IPL either.

As a result he was left out of the squad and Vijay Shankar was roped in instead. But just in case a top-order player gets injured, Rayudu will surely be called. However those chances are bleak as the management might not immediately call in a replacement. This is because there are plenty of options available in the existing squad.
