Uthappa came into the set-up as an aggressive opener during the 2005 Challenger Series. In 2006 against England, he replaced Virender Sehwag and scored a classic 86 on his ODI debut.

However because of the presence of openers like¬†Ganguly, Sehwag and Tendulkar, Uthappa didn’t get much chance. Moreover his lack of runs in the domestic circuit made it harder for him to make a comeback.

Once again after 2008 he got an opportunity in 2014. But at that time Dhawan and Rohit had established themselves. As a result Uthappa never got enough opportunities to prove his mettle.
