Uthappa came into the set-up as an aggressive opener during the 2005 Challenger Series. In 2006 against England, he replaced Virender Sehwag and scored a classic 86 on his ODI debut.
However because of the presence of openers like Ganguly, Sehwag and Tendulkar, Uthappa didn’t get much chance. Moreover his lack of runs in the domestic circuit made it harder for him to make a comeback.
Once again after 2008 he got an opportunity in 2014. But at that time Dhawan and Rohit had established themselves. As a result Uthappa never got enough opportunities to prove his mettle.
