Recently during the semi-final of the Ranji Trophy between Karnataka and Saurashtra, a bizarre incident took place. Saurashtra’s batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was in the spotlight because some of the umpiring decisions went in favour of him.

Twice in the same match, Pujara got a life even after nicking the ball to the wicketkeeper. As a result of the extra life in the 4th innings, Pujara scored a century. That helped Saurashtra qualify for the final despite Karnataka getting a good first innings lead.

Pujara’s sportsmanship came under the scanner as he didn’t walk away despite edging the ball twice. The entire stadium booed him for this. However this was not the first time an Indian player faced the wrath of the Indian crowd.

Pujara was not given out when he was batting on 1 in the first innings. Replays clearly suggested that the ball has brushed Pujara’s gloves. He ended his innings on 45 and reduced the first innings deficit.

While he was walking out to bat in the second innings, Pujara was booed by the crowd. They were chants of “Cheater” and “Cheater Pujara” all around the stadium.

Once again in the second innings he got a life when he was batting on 34. Just like the first innings, Pujara stood his ground as the umpire struck down the appeal.

As a result the crowd continued chanting “Cheater Pujara” when he walked towards the dressing room during Tea interval. However the same crowd appreciated the Test specialist when scored his hundred.
