The Men in Blue were considered the red-hot favourites against the Kiwis in the T20I series. The belief became more strong after India thumped New Zealand 4-1 in the ODI series. The momentum was with the visitors ahead of the first T20I at Wellington.

But things went wrong for India as the hosts humbled them by 80 runs. It was India’s biggest defeat in terms of runs. The performance of both the teams were miles apart.

India were very erratic in all the departments, while New Zealand were very clinical. The hosts would now want to win the 2nd T20I too and seal the series 2-0. India will look to put the huge defeat behind them and put on a better performance.

Stop-gap skipper Rohit Sharma should score big

India’s strong performance in limited overs format mostly goes to the top order batsmen. With Virat Kohli being rested, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have to score big. Taking into Rohit’s previous records with Mumbai Indians and India, we all know he is a successful T20I skipper.

However he needs to see some deliveries and get his eyes before going bonkers. Had he settled a bit more in the first T20I against Tim Southee’s bowling, there were plenty of runs waiting for him.

Rohit has the ability to make up for the slow start later in his innings. If he can fire on all cylinders, he can negate the threat of Lockie Ferguson and Tim Southee. Once Rohit gets going, it will be difficult for Mitchell Santner, Colin de Grandhomme and Ish Sodhi to keep him quiet.
