Asghar Afghan Removed As Afghanistan’s Captain

Ahead of the 2019 World Cup, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has taken a massive decision. Their long-time captain Asghar Afghan has been sacked as a captain from all the three formats.

It is a huge and shocking news as the team looked pretty settled with Asghar as their captain. Moreover they won all the three series against Ireland in the last and final international assignment.

Reports from TOLO News suggest that, Gulbadin Naib is elected as the ODI captain. As a result he will lead the team in the 2019 World Cup which starts from May 30. The World Cup squad will soon be announced and things will become clearer then.

Rashid Khan is named the T20I captain while Rahmat Shah is given the Test captaincy. Rashid will also be the vice-captain in ODIs while Shafiquallah Shafaq will be deputy in T20Is.

Hashmatullah Shahidi will assist Rahmat during the Tests. All these changes right before the World Cup can be testing. One would hope that everything falls into place and Afghanistan does well in their first World Cup.

Captaincy record of Asghar

As a captain Asghar has done a pretty fine job. This is why his sacking, and that too right before the World Cup, comes as a huge shocking news. In ODIs, Asghar has led the team in 56 occasions and has won 31 of them.

In T20Is he has a great record as he won 37 out of 46 matches Afghanistan has played under him. Asghar has captained in two Tests against India and Ireland. While he lost against India, he guided his team to their first Test victory against Ireland.
