5 Promising Indians Who Might Lose The No. 4 WC Spot

The Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup is to be announced today, i.e. on April 15. Almost all the places are certain except the No. 4 position. Previously it was taken by Yuvraj Singh, who was dropped after the Windies tour in June 2017.

Understandably it is difficult to fill the shoes of the veteran. Ambati Rayudu showed some promise at the beginning. He scored a hundred against the Windies and then a 90 against New Zealand.

Later Vijay Shankar showed some promise and will definitely be selected for the World Cup. Before Rayudu, there were many players who were tried for the middle order. But they couldn’t solve the anagram of the No. 4 spot.

From Kohli and Dhoni to youngsters like KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya, no one could stabilize the middle order. There were other players too who were tried but are now left far behind in the race for the World Cup.

The batsman from Mumbai has a reposeful attitude and has a great technique with the bat. Especially known as the Test specialist player, Rahane’s ODI career has been in ups and downs.

He is the vice-captain of the Test team, but in the ODIs he failed to cement his position. After the 2015 World Cup, Rahane has been in and out of the team. In 2017 against Windies and Australia at home, he scored a flurry of fifties.

But those scores came at the opening position in absence of either Rohit Sharma or Shikhar Dhawan. After Yuvi was axed, Rahane was entrusted with the No. 4 spot. He started well with a 79 against South Africa in January 2018.

When all seemed set, scores of 11, 8, 8 and 34* in the next four innings ended his journey. Since then Rahane hasn’t played in the ODI format. Not only he lost the middle order spot, but also he was left out as the option of being a backup opener.
