Prudential World Cups (1975 – 1983)

England was the only nation which has the money to stage an event of such a huge magnitude like the World Cup, became the first nation to host the inaugural World Cup in 1975.

The first three World Cups were officially known as the Prudential World Cups, as they were named after the sponsors, Prudential plc, which is a British multinational life insurance and financial services company.

The matches were played in broad daylight and each match consisted of 60 overs for each team, in which a single had six deliveries to be bowled.

In the first tournament, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and a composite team of East Africa (which consisted of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia) took part. South Africa could not take part in the tournament as they were banned from international cricket at that time due to apartheid.

Prudential Cup

In the 1979 World Cup, ICC Trophy was introduced though which it was decided that non-Test playing nations will be selected for the World Cup.

From the 1983 event, a 30 yards (27 metre) circle away from the stumps was introduced and it was made mandatory that four fielders should always remain inside the circle.

From the 1987 tournament, overs per innings were reduced to 50 from the earlier 60. The format of the tournament has changed multiple times over the years. Sometimes teams are divided into groups and they play among themselves in a round-robin format. In the 2019 edition, the 10 teams will face each other in a round-robin format and the teams with higher points will progress in the tournament.

In the 2003 World Cup, mascots were introduced for the first time. Dazzler, the zebra was the mascot of 2003. Mello, an orange mongoose was the mascot of 2007. The mascot of 2011 was Stumpy, a blue elephant.

T20 cricket came into place after the Benson & Hedges Cup ended in 2002, and ECB needed another one-day tournament in its place. It was then Stuart Robertson, the marketing manager of the ECB, who proposed that a new shorter format consisting of twenty overs per team be adopted.

ICC World T20 Cup

The initial T20 cricket was adopted for the England County Cricket. The official international T20 match was first held at Eden Park in Auckland between Australia and New Zealand.
