Captains like C.K. Nayadu, Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni have graced the Indian cricket. When Dhoni stepped into the field many hadn’t thought him as a captain. But later seeing his cricketing brains, many seniors backed him for taking up captaincy.

1. Wasim Jaffer, IND 2007

The Mumbaikar batsman got his debut Test cap when South Africa visited India in 2000. In that series Jaffer was troubled by the Proteas pacers as he scored just 46 in 4 innings. As a result he was dropped from the team.

Jaffer then returned when India travelled to the Windies and scored a sparkling century in the 2nd Test. With his opening and defensive skills, Jaffer established himself. Till 2007, he had scored 5 centuries which included two double tons against Windies and Pakistan.

In 2008, the Proteas visited for a 3-match Test series. Kumble was India’s skipper and Sehwag-Jaffer was the opening combination. The first Test at Chennai was a draw while South Africa won the Ahmedabad Test by an innings and 90 runs.

In the final Test at Kanpur, Kumble was unfit and Dhoni became the captain. India won the game by 8 wickets and leveled the series 1-1. Jaffer was having a worst time at that moment and had one fifty in 14 innings. In his last Test he had scores of 9 and 19. He was never picked later and played inly one tie under MSD.
