Virat Kohli to Receive Cricketer of the Year at BCCI Annual Gala

The current skipper of the Indian men’s cricket team Virat Kohli is going to be awarded BCCI’s best cricketer award for two seasons, thanks to his phenomenal batting.

Cricket news: Here are the list or award winners for the season 2016-17 and 2017-18

World cup stars from Indian women’s cricket team, Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, were chosen for the same equivalent honour.

“Following his phenomenal show in the past two seasons, Team India captain ViratKohli will be presented with the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award for the best international cricketer (2016-17 and 2017-18) at the BCCI Awards to be held in Bengaluru on June 12,” the BCCI stated.

Kohli’s 2016-17 seasons has been fantastic as he had scored 1332 runs from 13 Tests with an outstanding average of 74.

In ODIs he has an average of 84.22 as he had scored 1516 runs from 27 ODIs. In 2017-18 season, he has scored 896 runs, with 89.6 average from six Tests and 75.50 average in ODI.

Kohli will be awarded with Rs. 15 lakhs for each season, while for Kaur and Mandhana, it will be their maiden award for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons respectively.

The trophy is rechristened in the name of Jagmohan Dalmiya, the late administrator of BCCI.

“The Jagmohan Dalmiya Trophy will be presented to the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker respectively in the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy and to the Best Junior and Senior Cricketer in women’s cricket.”

The Board also increased the prize money by one lakh rupees in nine categories and the reward now stand at Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Also it will be first time the Board has decided to award late Pankaj Roy with the lifetime achievement award (2016-17) after much confusion whether it should be given to the former batsman posthumously.

The Cricket Association of Bengal was awarded the best State Association for the season 2016-17, while the Delhi and District Cricket Association won it in 2017-18 seasons.

“The last two years have been fabulous for Indian Cricket with both the men and women’s teams doing very well. We are proud of their achievements and this is our small way of acknowledging their on-field efforts,” Committee of Administrators ChairmanVinod Rai said.

Diana Edulji, who is a CoA member, was also named for the lifetime achievement award (2016-17), but declined for his position and also congratulated the winners.

“This year we will be presenting awards for the past two seasons and it is going to be a big occasion ahead of the historic Test against Afghanistan. For the first time, an award category for the best International Cricketer (Woman) has been introduced and it is a step in the right direction,” she said.

“For BCCI, it is an opportunity to show its gratitude towards cricketers who enrich this game with their skills and hard work,” added BCCI acting President C K Khanna.
