IPL Schedule Leaves India-Zimbabwe Series In Doubt

The upcoming proposed series of India against Zimbabwe at home might now get cancelled. This is because of the schedule of 2019 Indian Premier League.

On the previous week, BCCI had announced that this year the IPL would begin from March 23. This ended all the specualtions over the starting date of the league.

This has been done keeping in mind about the World Cup which is scheduled in May. The decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India will give the players adequate rest before the mega-event in England.

However on the other end, the series against Zimbabwe might get jeopardized because of the decision. The series has still not been announced yet. But reports have suggested that the African country was scheduled to visit the Indian subcontinent at some point in March.

It was decided that India would host Zimbabwe for one Test and three ODIs. But it now looks highly unlikely because of the cramped up schedule.

A series after a long period of time

India are currently in the final leg of their two-month long Australian tour. It would end in January 18. After that the team would fly to New Zealand for five ODIs and three T20Is, which would begin from January 23 and end on February 10.

After that India will welcome Australia at home for two T20Is and five ODIs. The home series will be played from 24 February to 13 March.

This leaves only 10 days to squeeze in the Zimbabwe series. Thus it seems that the series might be restructured, postponed or will be cancelled entirely.

According to reports in ESPNCricinfo,  managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket Givemore Makoni will talk with BCCI officials. He might suggest cancelling the one-off Test for T20Is and ODIs.

Zimbabwe had previously visited India for World T20 in 2016, World Cup in 2011 and Champions Trophy in 2006. But a bilateral tour between the two teams in the subcontinent would be the first since 2002.

However both the teams have played bilateral series when India toured Zimbabwe in 2016. In that tour three ODIs and three T20Is were played.
