Gavaskar Doesn’t Want Dhoni To Play T20Is Against NZ

The entire cricketing fraternity is now eagerly waiting for the T20I series between New Zealand and India to begin. The expectations have risen even higher after the ODI series failed to impress many.

While the ODI series promised to be a blockbuster affair, but it turned out totally different. Each of the games turned out to be one-sided contest. Eventually India won the series 4-1. Now the Kiwis will try to win the T20Is.

New Zealand have always got the upper hand in this format. Moreover the Men in Blue will play without their regular skipper Virat Kohli. It will be very important for the management to find the right combination ahead of the series-opener.

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar thinks Dhoni shouldn’t play the T20I series. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been in stunning form of late after a dismal 2018 year.

The veteran scored three half-centuries (51, 55 and 87) against Australia to guide his team to their first bilateral series win. As a result he was awarded the Man of the Series. Dhoni also scored an unbeaten 48 in the second ODI against the Kiwis in testing conditions.

However during an interview with Star Sports, Gavaskar believed that India should rest Dhoni. He feels the veteran needs some fresh air before the home series against Australia later this month. In place of him Gavaskar wants the management to try out some youngsters. Former Kiwi coach Mike Hesson also agreed with Sunny.

Gavaskar has put forward his own choice for India’s batting lineup. His choice includes Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya.

Hesson also said that the series would be a huge opportunity for the young players. He said, “This will be a huge opportunity for Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik to solve those World Cup decisions. We know MS Dhoni is going to be part of World Cup.”

Gavaskar ended the interview by predicting the result of the T20I series. He feels that the Men in Blue will come out victorious in the series and feels the result will be 2-1.

However although India have dominated over New Zealand in Tests and ODIs, but that hasn’t been the case in T20Is. India had to wait 10 years to beat the Black Caps after their first meeting in 2007 World Cup.

In 2017 when India hosted New Zealand at home, they registered their first win over the Kiwis in T20Is. So far both the teams have played nine games and India has won only two matches.
