The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally announced the 15-man Indian squad for World Cup 2019. MSK Prasad revealed the names of the players in the press conference, with most of the expected names.

Virat Kohli is named the skipper and will lead the team in the World Cup for the first time. The tournament is scheduled to begin on May 30 with the game between England and South Africa.

After much deliberations, Ambati Rayudu’s name is not listed in the team list. Rayudu missed the flight to England after being in poor form for a long time. Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are the three all-rounders in the team.

Shankar might also take up the role of batting at the much-debated No. 4 position. For the first time the bowling of the Indian squad looks settled. Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah are the three pacers, who have the ability to topple the opposition on any given day.

The pacers will be assisted by two spinners in the likes of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. Kedar Jadhav is also selected and he can also roll his arms sometimes if required during the course of the game.

Karthik overtakes Pant to get into the Indian squad

The hot-topic of the squad selection was the announcement of the back-up wicket-keeper. The selection committed preferred matured Dinesh Karthik in place of young Rishabh Pant. It isn’t a surprise decision as Pant hasn’t done much in his short ODI career while Karthik is a better option.

Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and MS Dhoni will walk into the squad on any given day. Rohit and Dhawan will open the innings as they did in World Cup 2015. Veteran Dhoni will be playing the tournament only as a player.

This will be the first time that MSD will not be the captain. Previously in all the T20 and 50-over World Cups, MSD has captained India. Although the World Cup will begin on May 30, India will play their first game on June 5 against South Africa in Southampton.
