Australian cricket is still suffering due to sandpaper gate incident which happened against South Africa. Then skipper Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned from playing cricket.

Their ban have created all sorts of doldrums in the nation’s sport. Their bans are set to be lifted at the end of March, and any team would love to have both the star batsman back.

But Smith has suffered an elbow injury combined with his lack of game time might lead to his missing the World Cup. Reports from ESPNCricinfo suggest that Smith might not play the World Cup. Rather he would play with Australia A on the team’s tour.

Cricket Australia would be looking to bring back Smith smoothly during the Ashes. The elbow injury has more or less led to Smith’s exclusion from the upcoming Pakistan series.

Even coach Justin Langar’s words suggested that the star batsman might not play the World Cup. Langar said that the management would definitely think about the team first before thinking about any individual person.

“We’re talking about two great players (Warner and Smith), we’re not talking about two really good players. Two great players who on paper we’d be crazy not to have them in the team. It’s about how much cricket they get to play between now and then. They’ll find opportunities. We’ll find opportunities, but I can’t say anything else.

“We’ve got to keep our eyes very clearly on what’s best for the team, not what’s best for individuals. That doesn’t work. It’d be hard to do that. It’d be good for some individuals to do that, but we’ve also got to win the World Cup. That’s just the schedule we deal with,” Langer said.

David Warner might make a return

Australia would get a ray of hope as their another star batsman David Warner would return after his ban ends on 29 March. Australia is all set to play an ODI series against Pakistan in the UAE.

The left-hander batsman might get a chance to cement his place in the team for the World Cup. Like Smith, Warner also had a minor elbow surgery. But his injury wasn’t serious like the former Aussie skipper.

The deadline for all the teams to submit their squad for World Cup is 23 April. During that time Indian Premier League (IPL) will be in progress. Only time will say how Australia will handle this tough situation.
