In 2003 Aussie spin legend Shane Warne was sen back home from World Cup after failing to clear a drug test. A similar scenario happened when England’s Alex Hales was dropped from WC squad recently.

Hales was banned for 21 days after he was caught for taking a recreational drug. This was Hales’ second violation and English cricket authorities took harsh steps. They left out Hales from the World Cup squad which has left the player ‘devastated’.

Hales is one of England’s main batsman and has scored 7 ODI centuries so far. Previously he was assured that the drug test result will not affect his World Cup prospects. But eventually he was dropped out of the squad.

“We are hugely disappointed at the treatment of our client, Alex Hales, by the ECB following his ejection from England’s preliminary World Cup squad,” Hales’ management company 366 Group said in a statement.

“Nobody is seeking to excuse Alex’s behaviour in this instance. He absolutely acknowledges and recognises he made a huge mistake. But as part of the ongoing process, both he and his representatives have been involved in many conversations with senior members of the ECB over the past few weeks where Alex has apologised profusely for his actions.”

All assurances fell flat

The company said that Hales was assured that his suspension will not affect his World Cup selection. As a result the cricketer started to believe that his selection was judged more by merit.

“The fact all those assurances seem to have been rendered meaningless has understandably left Alex devastated. He will take time to reflect on both his actions and the subsequent decisions but will receive the support from his team he deserves.”

Hales was the part of 2015 World Cup squad too. However in that edition he played just two games, against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. England have May 23 as the deadline to finalize their World Cup squad. Reports suggest that Hames Vince might be named as the replacement of Hales.
