It has been 12 years that the Delhi-born tall lanky pacer made his international debut. Although Ishant was rated pretty high during his initial times, yet he failed to keep up as he was very inconsistent. He was always in and out of the squad.

However Dhoni kept his faith in him and later Ishant became India’s premier Test pacer, especially in foreign conditions. In 2013 Champions Trophy final against England, which was reduced to 20 overs, Ishant became the hero in the 18th over.

Before that Ishant had gone for plenty of runs. But Dhoni persisted with him and the pacer delivered with 2 wickets in the same over which changed the game. India won the Champions Trophy and Ishant’s career changed.

In 2014 during Lord’s Test, Dhoni asked Ishant to remain persistent with short-ball barrage. This tactic worked as Ishant blew away England’s batting and gave India a memorable Test win at Lord’s. Thus Dhoni definitely had a huge hand in shaping Ishant’s successful career.

5. Suresh Raina

Although the Uttar Pradesh-born all-rounder made his debut in 2005, it was under Dhoni that Raina made a successful start. Raina began his ODI career on a good note but later started struggling between May 2006 to May 2008.

It was during the Asia Cup in 2008 that Raina thoroughly flourished. He scored lots of runs in that tournament and after that he was barely dropped from the side in shorter formats. Moreover Raina enjoyed Dhoni’s confidence more as the duo played together in IPL.

Raina played some important knocks in the quarter-final and semi-final of 2011 World Cup. Even then India coach Gary Kirsten has acknowledged that it was because of Raina that India had won the World Cup.

Raina scored all his 5 ODI centuries under Dhoni’s captaincy and his average also bettered under MSD. However Dhoni couldn’t do much for Raina in the longest format. Raina got some chances in 2010 and 2011, but due to his inconsistency, he was dropped from the side.
