After a year long ban Australian David Warner has returned to cricket. He will play in the upcoming IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad. This news is a big boost for the 2016 IPL winners.

The former Aussie vice-captain was banned due to a ball-tampering incident. Although he will play the IPL yet he will not lead the Sunrisers Hyderabad team. After the ban of Warner, Kiwi captain Kane Williamson led the SRH.

Williamson has been successful both as a batsman and captain. Last year he led the team to the finals where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. As a batsman he was the league’s highest scored and was awarded the Orange Cap. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar will serve as Williamson’s deputy.

32-year-old Warner has an impressive IPL record with over 4000 runs which contains three centuries. He was the skipper when SRH won the title in 2016. His ban will be lifted on March 29 which means he will start playing after one or two league games.

SRH will begin their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 24. In the previous year, SRH defeated KKR in the qualifiers and progressed to the finals. The mentor of the Orange Army, VVS Laxman, said that the leadership hierarchy of his team will remain the same.

“Kane is an outstanding batsman and also a highly respected international player. He has stepped in for us last year and has shown good leadership qualities,” Laxman was quoted as saying by Times of India (TOI).

There are other players in the likes of Warner, Shakib Al Hasan and Manish Pandey who has captaincy experience. Laxman feels that the presence of these players gives a sense of satisfaction in the role of leadership of the team.

The former Indian cricketer said that he is proud of Warner’s achievements. He also added that the punishment given to Warner was a bit harsh. “Personally, I felt the punishment was not right since I have seen him from close quarters. I am sure that he would continue to contribute for Sunrisers,” Laxman added.

SRH will play without their star batsman Shikhar Dhawan. This is because Dhawan was transferred to Delhi Capitals in exchange for three other players.

Besides Warner, former Aussie captain Steve Smith is also returning from ban. He will play for Rajasthan Royals this season, and only as a player. Ajinkya Rahane, who became the skipper in Smith’s absence, will continue leading the team.
