Gambhir Advises Kohli To Not Get Personal On Field

Current Indian skipper Virat Kohli makes it to the headlines more often than anyone else. Along with his batting exploits, he also gets in the news for his antics on and off the field.

The latest example was the incidents in the Perth Test between Australia and India. Replying to Australia’s 326-first innings runs, India lost their openers for 8 runs.

From there Kohli showed his class and scored a brilliant 123 to bail India out of trouble. But the troubles started after he reached his ton, especially his celebration.

He removed his helmet and put it on the ground. Then he pointed to his bat and mimicked with his glove, as if to say the bat is talking. The celebration made it crystal clear that the captain is making everything personal.

Later his antics also proved it right. From asking the crowd to make more noise to encouraging his teammates to celebrate each Aussie wicket, the speculations proved right.

The ultimate highlight was when Kohli started a verbal duel with his Aussie counterpart Tim Paine. That handed with an interesting handshake at the end of the game. Kohli didn’t look into Paine’s eye while making the handshake, which drew criticisms from all around the world.

Kohli’s aggressive attitude in Perth has divided the cricketing fraternity in two halves. While some were criticizing him, while other were sympathizing him.

Gambhir also speaks on Kumble issue

The latest addition to that list was the former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. The left-handed batsman didn’t speak directly on the issue. Rather he hinted that Kohli should behave on the field and not get personal. This is because he is skipper of the team and the ambassador for the country.

“I’ve always believed that aggression is fine. I think sledging is fine and aggression is fine till the time you do it within the rules of the game, till the time you don’t cross the limit and you don’t get personal. Because when you are captaining the country, you are a role model for the entire country, you are the ambassador for the country,” he told the Quint.

Gambhir also talked about the infamous incident of Anil Kumble’s sacking as coach. Kumble had to step down despite having an impressive track record. Kumble cited his resignation saying that Kohli had reservations over his style of functioning.

Recently Diana Edulji, a CoA member, revealed that Kohli had sent texts to board’s CEO Rahul Johri, asking him to remove Kumble and appoint Ravi Shastri as head coach.

“It was probably the darkest phase in Indian cricket. If 15 people are not happy with one person, obviously it is time for him to go, but if one person is not happy with a certain individual, you have to sort out your differences because ultimately he’s the coach of the entire 15-man squad, not just one player. There are 130 crore people who are looking up to the Indian team as well, so I am sure you can leave your ego behind because you have a far bigger responsibility to deal with when you represent the nation,” added Gambhir.
