Harbhajan Singh Family

Harbhajan Singh Plaha, who is affectionately known as ‘Bhajji’ in the cricketing fraternity, is a former Indian cricketer who was a specialist spin bowler in the squad and is the holder of the second highest Test wickets by an off-spinner behind Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka.

He was born to a Sikh family on 3 July 1980 and was the only son in the family and had five siblings who were girls.

His father, Sardar Sardev Singh Plaha, owned a ball bearing and valve factory. Being the only son in the family, it was destined that Harbhajan would inherit the family business. But his father wanted Harbhajan to play cricket instead and to represent his country at the international level.

Harbhajan began his cricket training in his childhood as a batsman under coach Charanjit Singh bhullar. But after his coach’s untimely death, he turned to the tutelage of Davinder Arora and took up spin bowling.

Arora has credited Bhajji’s success to his hard-working schedule of his training, as he used to train three hours in the morning and later started training from 3 pm and continued until after sunset.

Harbhajan became the family head after his father’s death in 2000 and by 2001 he had arranged the marriages for three of his sisters.

In 2002 he fended off his own marriage rumours and in 2005 he again did so when he was linked to a Bangalore-based bride, stating that he would marry a Punjabi bride who would be selected by his family.

After his successful performance in 2001 against Australia, he was awarded Rs. 5 lakhs by the Government of Punjab and was also offered the post of Deputy Superintendent of Punjab Police, which Harbhajan accepted.
