Mumbai Indians Needs Tactical Changes Before It gets Too Late

Having won the title three times, Mumbai Indians are the most successful side in the competition and they came into the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League as the defending champions.

Cricket News: Three changes in strategy can change the fortunes of Mumbai Indians

The management was able to keep the core team which won the 2017 title but a poor start in this year’s competition has put them into trouble. Having lost 5 of their 6 matches, they currently seat at the bottom of the table.

The team has failed in some aspects and some improvement in their strategy can lift them up and bring them back in the competition as it did in the 2015 victory.

1. Promoting Rohit Sharma in the top order

The skipper of the Mumbai Indians team is their most important batsman as well and his form is required for the success of his team. As the most important batsman, he should face the maximum number of deliveries and make a solid score for his team.

The only match this season which Mumbai has won, Rohit came to bat in the 3rd delivery and stayed throughout the innings to score 94 off 52 deliveries. He should play as an anchor and let other batsmen build their innings around him, just like what Sachin did in 2010.

His problems against spin can get solved in the powerplay where he can get a good start, and once he settles down, he becomes a dangerous batsman in the death overs.

2. Role of spinners in powerplay overs

Rohit has been one of the few captains who has looked to his pack attack rather than using his spinners in the powerplay, as his spinners are inexperienced.

Mumbai has some good spinners in the likes of Mayank Markande and Rahul Chahar who, if properly used, can pick up early wickets and can put the opposition in pressure.

Chennai has used three spinners and has been extremely successful till now, while Mumbai has been struggling with Krunal Pandya who has not been in a good form.

3. Bringing Duminy back into the starting XI

Although JP Duminy can play anywhere in the batting order, yet he has not been used for a single match this season. As Kieron Pollard and the Pandya brothers are having a poor season, it is high time for the management to select Duminy.

Pollard can be left out or can be promoted higher the order so that he can regain his form by playing in a restrained manner, while Duminy can act as a finisher and finish things off for Mumbai.
