How The T20I Series Between India And Australia Will Affect Team Rankings?

Both India and Australia are currently playing for glory in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series. The game is being played at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The visitors are eager to win the contest this time and more so as they are termed the favourites. Moreover the home team is in a total mess presently.

They have lost 3-0 against Pakistan in an away series. In addition to that they lost the home series against South Africa.

India is presently in the second place of the T20I rankings. They trail their arch-rivals Pakistan by a massive 11 points. The rankings show that both the Asian teams are dominating this year in the shortest format.

Australia are currently at the fourth place with 116 points. They have a chance to overtake England who are sitting in the third place with a two-point difference.

If India manages to get a clean sweep, as they did in 2016, they will only gain two points. This is because India is higher in the rankings.

This will reduce the gap with Pakistan and will stand at 9-points difference. Australia will however drop to sixth place by losing four points.

But if India loses even a single match, they will not get any point and will stay at the second position. However India will need to be careful of not losing the series by 1-2 or 0-3.

If somehow Australia wins the series, India will lose two rating points. Australia will then jump to third place with 119 points.

If Australia miraculously manages a clean sweep, India will lose four points while Australia will gain six. Australia will then come very close to India and both the teams will be separated by only one point.

If one of the matches gets abandoned by rain and the series gets level, India will lose one point and Australia will gain one. The positions of the teams will however not change.

After the Brisbane action, the other matches will be played in Melbourne and Sydney on November 23 and 25 respectively.

Here are the detailed scenarios:

1. India 3 – 0 Australia: India will stay at the second position and gain two points to reach 129. Australia will lose four points and slip to sixth spot.

2. India 2 – 1 Australia: India will stay at 127 points while the hosts will lose one rating point and both the teams will hold on to their current rankings.

3. India 1 – 2 Australia: India will lose a couple of rating points to come down to 125 while the Aussies will climb to the third position overhauling England.

4. India 1 – 1 Australia: India will lose one point and their opponents will gain a point.
