On the 23rd of May 2018, the entire cricketing fraternity was taken by shock when one of South Africa’s greatest cricketers AB de Villiers decided to hand up his boots from international cricket.

Cricket news: He was expected to make a comeback from retirement and play for South Africa in the 2019 World Cup

No one had thought that he would make such a decision as he looked in great shape to demolish the bowlers for a few more years. However he said that he has run out of gas and wanted the future generation to take his place.

However there were still some speculations that De Villiers might come out of his retirement and will be a part of the Proteas squad for the upcoming 2019 World Cup. However he has himself now quashed all such rumours and has said that he has no plans to play for South Africa again.

“No, there is no comeback. I made the mistake of saying ‘never say never’, which is a philosophy that I have always followed in my life.

“I was actually trying to say that I am focusing on the now, but it came out horribly wrong and the next minute there were headlines around the world. It will be very selfish and arrogant of me to throw statements around that I want to play at the World Cup. I am happy where I am and focusing on the now and I will never say ‘never say never’ again,” de Villiers was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

However he will still be playing franchise cricket as his next endeavour would be playing in the Mzansi Super League where he will be playing for the franchise Tshwane Spartans which will be captained by England’s limited overs captain Eoin Morgan.

“I am very happy because he [Morgan] is a great leader and he has been in fantastic form. He is a match-winner and I think we got lucky with him. I don’t know how he ended up in our team because I thought he was going to be picked up earlier. I am very happy to have him in our team.” de Villiers added.

The Mzansi Super League is a six-team affair, where a total of 32 matches will be played over a span of one month and it will begin from 16 November.
