Personal life

Hazel Keech was born in 28 February 1987 to father of British origin and an Indo-Mauritian mother of Bihari ancestry. Her birthplace is in Essex, England.

Keech is a British-Mauritian model and an actress who has appeared in several Indian TV shows and Bollywood films. She became famous in the cricketing fraternity when she married Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh.

Her grandmother is a Brahmakumari and as a result Keech was quite acquainted with the Indian cultures and festivals. She also celebrated Diwali as a kid.

She was accustomed of seeing her mother and grandmother wearing saree, and so she also knew how to drape a saree and thus never felt left out when she came to India.

Keech has an elder sister named Tina Keech who is a football player by profession. Keech studies in the Beal High School, situated in Redbridge, London.

While studying in the school she used to perform in several stage shows and also learned how to dance. Indian classical, British dance and Western contemporary dance are among the various dance forms she has learnt.

Work life

Keech first started working as a dancer in the British programme Agatha Christie’s Maple. In 2002, she joined the Bollywood musical ‘Bombay Dreams’ and participated in their London promotional tour.

The music of Bombay Dreams was given by A. R. Rahman. In the next year, she sang in the choir of the West End musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’.

When Keech was just 18 years old, she visited Mumbai for a holiday. That vacation changed her career forever as she was offered several modelling and acting assignments.

Keech then decided to stay back in India to pursue her career here. She started appearing in small roles in television and films and also appeared in commercials and music videos.

She got noticed for the first time at the age of 19 when she appeared as a dancer in Frankfinn Music remix item number ‘Kahin Pe Nigahaen’, for which she was credited as ‘Rose Dawn’.

Keech has also worked as an extra in the first three instalments of Harry Potter films (2001, 2002 and 2004). But when she was approached with a more significant role for the latter films, she refused to take it in order to work in Bollywood full time.

In 2007 she appeared in the Tamil film ‘Billa’ which was a remake of 1978 Hindi movie ‘Don’. In that film she performed an item number ‘Sei Ethavathu’.

In 2011, Keech was cast by Bollywood director Atul Agnihotri for a supporting role in the film ‘Bodyguard’ which also starred Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

Keech also performed in item song ‘Aa Ante Amlapuram’ in the movie ‘Maximum’. She performed in another song ‘Chal Chal Chal’ in the film ‘Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum’ in 2012.

In 2013 she entered in ‘Bigg Boss 7’ as a participant but was eliminated a week later and was the first participant to get eliminated from the show.

She also featured as the face of the gadgets and technology magazine ‘Stuff India’ where she appeared as their magazine cover model for the January 2013 issue.

Relation with Yuvraj Singh and Becoming Yuvraj Singh Wife

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has been previously linked with various Bollywood actresses in the likes of Kim Sharma, Preity Zinta and Deepika Padukone.

So when Hazel and Yuvraj began to be spotted together, media was quick to make a romantic link-up. However both of them had started dating each other long before they made it official.

When Yuvraj’s team-mate Harbhajan Singh got married, it was reported that Yuvi’s roka ceremony will be held in November 2015. But Yuvi mocked the news on social media.

Later it was revealed that the couple had secretly got engaged in Bali on 12 November 2015. The manager of Yuvraj and Hazel herself confirmed the news of their private engagement and their photos of vacationing together soon started to surface.

The couple got married on 30 November 2016 in a simple ceremony at Baba Ram Singh Ganduan Wale’s dera in Duffera.

Before the marriage took place, Hazel Keech had to change her name to Gurbasant Kaur according to Sikh traditions. The name was suggested by Yuvraj’s family guru Baba Ram Singh ji.

Saint Balvinder Singh gave Hazel her new name, and the name was announced at Anand Karaj ceremony which took place at the Fatehgarh Sahib Gurdwara in Chandigarh, and was attended by only family members and close relatives.

After the gurdwara ceremony, the couple had another wedding ceremony, as per the Hindu-Bihari rituals, which took place in Goa.

For the wedding the couple looked stunning in their gorgeous maroon and beige colour-coordinated outfits. After the wedding the couple threw lavish reception parties in both Goa and Delhi.

The Sangeet ceremony was held on 5 December 2016 where Yuvraj wore a black velvet bandhgala teamed with formal trousers and the lovely Hazel chose traditional attire in green.

Besides Angad Bedi, who is Yuvi’s best friend and Bruna Abdullah, who is Hazel’s best friend, the sangeet ceremony was attended by who’s who of the entire cricketing and the film world.
