The former French international Zinedine Zidane, who is currently managing the Spanish giant Real Madrid since 2016 was happy to get three points against Athletic Club on Saturday, as Real Madrid secured their place atop LaLiga for the duration of the upcoming international break.

And Zinedine Zidane also congratulated his players for getting the three points at a difficult ground.

As goals from the French and Brazil international Karim Benzema and Casemiro respectively helped Real Madrid to win at San Mames in La Liga this season after Barcelona.

"We were under the coach at times but I think we show great character," the French coach said.

"It was a really important time to keep the good run going. We knew how tough it would be to pick up points here."

The French man Zidane also praised Benzema, who's been criticized this season, for a great performance as he scored the very first goal of the match, which was later equalized by a header from Aritz Aduriz but just after a minute Casemiro scored the winning goal for Real Madrid.

Zidane also explained his decision to take Cristiano Ronaldo off in the second half.

He said, "Ronaldo can be taken off from time to time, there's nothing more to it. He is just happy we won the game.”

"Cristiano gave a lot during the game. When you have to run up front it is more difficult, that’s why we made those changes."
