Sachin Tendulkar Tweets about Virat Kohli’s 149 In Birmingham

In reply to England’s score of 287, the Indian contingent was about to sink as no other batsman scored above 30, when Virat Kohli’s crucial knock came to save the visitors.

Cricket news: Tendulkar praised Kohli’s batting in the first innings of the first Test in Edgbaston

The Indian skipper mainly batted with the tail-enders, especially with Ishant Sharma (5 off 17) and Umesh Yadav (1 not out off 16), and reached his first century on English soil, eventually finishing on 149 off 225 balls.

Kohli’s knock was indeed crucial as it brought the visitors close to the hosts, eventually giving the hosts a 13-runs lead as India was bowled out for 274.

Throughout the innings Kohli has 22 boundaries and a six and his innings brought a smile on the face of fans as it was a relief for them especially after Kohli’s dreaded tour of 2014, where he averaged only 13.5.

However the form of the other batsmen would put lines of worry on the forehead of the management as after Kohli the highest scorer is Shikhar Dhawan who scored 26.

With this century Kohli matched the record of Mohammed Azharuddin’s record of 22 Test centuries, though the former had done it 32 matches faster than the latter.

Before Kohli lie Tendulkar (51), Rahul Dravid (36), Sunil Gavaskar (34) and Virender Sehwag (23), who have more Test hundreds.

Kohli has also become the fastest captain to reach to 7000 international runs, and bettered the record of Brian Lara by 31 matches and 40 innings.

Former Indian legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar took to Twitter to praise the current Indian captain’s key innings in the first Test at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Tendulkar wrote, “A very important knock by @ImVkohli. Lovely way to set up the Test series. Congrats on your Test hundred. #ENGvIND”

Tendulkar scored 119 not out on 9 August 1990, his first Test/international century at Old Trafford in England to deny the hosts a victory. At that time Sachin was just 17 years old.
