It will be quiet interesting to see as of how the players are going to get retained and the surprise packages for the season

After 799 players registered for the Indian Premier League auction, the franchises have shortlisted a total of 351 for the event in Bangalore, the IPL governing body confirmed on Tuesday (February 14). There are as many as 122 international players, that includes six players from Associate nations.

Asghar Stanikzai, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Rashid Khan and Dawlat Zadran, all from Afghanistan, have made it to the list with UAE's Chirag Suri being the sixth player.

With England players keen to get a taste of the sought-after T20 league, many of them have put their names into the auction. The trio of Ben Stokes, Eoin Morgan and Chris Woakes have listed their base price as INR 2 crore. Australian pair of Mitchell Johnson and Pat Cummins, and Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews too have listed the highest base price. Ishant Sharma is the only Indian player among 23 others, who has picked a valuation of INR 2 crore, while Pawan Negi, who was bought for INR 8.5 crore last year by Delhi Daredevils, has settled for INR 30 lakhs.

This will be the final year of IPL before the teams overhaul their squads for the 2018 season. Considering this, the franchises may not splurge money like they had in the previous auctions.

The existing player contracts will expire after this season of the league and most players are expected to go under the hammer at a mega auction ahead of the 2018 season. The retention policy and the number of teams for the 2018 season – with Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals set to return after a two-year ban – are among the decisions yet to be taken by the IPL governing body.
